MORE ON GROWTH AND LEADERSHIP

Opportunities for personal growth and leadership can be found everywhere in FCCLA. Almost everything you do in FCCLA helps develop these skills!
At the local level, you can run for a chapter officer. That is always a good way for you to become a leader. You could also attend workshops and have fun networking with other people. Volunteering to be the chairperson of a special committee is always an excellent idea. A good idea to jumpstart your STAR Event is to go around to homerooms and talk about the subject you're passionate about.
District opportunities have more of a variety. First, you could be a district officer--it isn't that hard! Attending district camp or the district meeting allows you to make new friends and gain more confidence. That is always a plus. You also have district Peer Ed teams and STAR Events. Those both broaden your knowledge and definitely help with time management. They give you the feeling of accomplishment when you’re done. Basically, both of them are good for you all around. Don’t be afraid to try them!
Now for state! STAR Events and state Peer Ed teams require just that much more effort and creativity. If you really want to be the best leader ever, go run to be a state officer. Griswold has had a state officer for 3 years running. We are hoping that this year will be a 4-timer! Running for an office gives you confidence, more knowledge about FCCLA, and builds future life skills. There are a few meetings that you could attend that will teach you new things. You can go to the Fall Leadership Rally and attend some workshops that will enhance your leadership skills. The State Leadership Conference lets you learn things that you can’t learn in a classroom. You get to know some world wide projects that people do to try and help the less fortunate. In addition, Day at the Capitol enables you to talk to the legislatures to help promote FCCLA and FCS education. Our members who attended last year felt they gained an infinite amount of confidence, and learned a lot about Iowa history--always good to know.
Lastly, we have the national level. At nationals, you can present your STAR Event, if qualified, which is a really good experience. While you’re at it, the national meeting is a blast. Great speakers present and show how you can help change the world. It is like the state conference, but turned up a few notches. You won’t be bored, that’s for sure. And yet again, you can run for a national office! Griswold hasn’t had any yet, but we’re sure that it is the absolute most amazing experience ever.
